How to Focus and Avoid Burnout at the End of the School Year
By Adam Delph, Head Learning Coach
Hi everyone,
As the end of the school year approaches, it’s easy to start daydreaming about summer plans, vacations, and backyard BBQs. While it’s exciting to look forward to the break, it’s important to remember that there are still a few weeks of schoolwork left. Staying focused now will help you finish the year on a high note and truly enjoy your summer.
Here are four practical tips to help you avoid burnout and finish the school year strong:
1) Take Regular Breaks
We’ve all experienced that moment when we’re trying to focus, but every little thing becomes a distraction—whether it’s tidying your desk, watering plants, or changing your playlist. These are signs of mental fatigue. The best remedy? Take a 10-15 minute break away from your workspace. Step outside, read a book, or grab a healthy snack—just avoid screens during this time. Set a timer to make sure your break doesn’t stretch too long, and return to your work refreshed and ready to focus.
2) Practice Square Breathing
If you’re feeling anxious about a big assignment or test, try the square breathing technique. It’s simple and effective:
- Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds
- Hold your breath for 4 seconds
- Exhale for 4 seconds
- Hold again for 4 seconds
Repeat this cycle 4-5 times. This technique can help lower your heart rate and reduce anxiety, making it easier to tackle challenging tasks.
3) Talk it Out
Working on assignments can sometimes feel isolating, especially with larger projects. Take a break to connect with someone—a parent, family member, teacher, or friend. Whether it’s a quick chat in person, over the phone, or online, human connection can boost your mood and motivation. If you’re stuck, ask for feedback or a fresh perspective on your work.
4) Create a Schedule
Planning your day can significantly reduce stress. Use a calendar to block out time for schoolwork, social activities, and self-care. You don’t need to schedule every minute—just set aside dedicated periods for each activity. This structure helps you stay focused on the task at hand and ensures you have time for both productivity and relaxation.
By following these tips, you can avoid burnout, stay focused, and finish the school year strong. With a little planning and self-care, you’ll be ready to enjoy your summer break to the fullest!
Best of luck as you wrap up the school year!
